Spend it on the Nidd
Following news that Yorkshire Water have agreed to make a £235,000 donation to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson Tom Gordon has called on the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to spend it in the Nidd.
After an Environment Agency investigation found they had illegally polluted Hookstone Beck, Yorkshire Water have agreed to pay £235,000 to the wildlife charity after illegally pumping sewage into Hookstone Beck, Harrogate.
Yorkshire Water breached the terms of its environmental permit in August 2015 when it discharged sewage into the Hookstone Beck in Harrogate.
It has been reported the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust plans to spend the money in Ripon City Wetlands and not in Harrogate, Knaresborough or on a project in the Nidd.
Commenting Tom Gordon said “It is only right that Yorkshire Water pay towards the cost of clearing up their mess. I have contacted Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to ask how this money will be spent. I want to see a local project with the money going towards improving the ecosystem here in the Nidd.
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust have run positive community based environmental projects in Hull and Bradford, there is a real opportunity for something here in Harrogate and Knaresborough."
